Dennis and Hubert early leaders
The CIK-FIA “U18” World Championship which got off the ground this week-end on the German circuit
“Prokart Raceland” at Wackersdorf has by and large reached all expectations. The drivers, all below 18
years of age, have produced a magnificient spectacle throughout the whole week-end and have proved
that this formula – based on minimum cost and a level-playing field for all entrants – has an exciting
future.
After the qualifying practices and heats, the 34 drivers who qualified for the Final phase contested 2 prefinals,
of which the second one, for the first time in a CIK-FIA World Championship, had a totally reversed
grid. After these two races, it was the Austrian Julian Wagner (Mach 1) who gained pole position. But all
the drivers knew perfectly well that only the Final would count for Championship points in this new “Under
18” World Championship.
First in front, the Finn Matias Köykkä (Maranello) gave up the lead to Simone Favaro (Parolin). But the
Italian was excluded after several laps for having caused an avoidable accident at the start. So, the young
British driver Jake Dennis (Top Kart) inherited the lead and never looked back. Coached by former World
Champion Terry Fullerton (1973) and supported by Racing Steps Foundation, which helps talented young
drivers with limited finances, the Englishman confirmed the faith placed in him. “It’s a great feeling to be
leading a World Championship standing”, acknowledged Jake. “This concept in which you put talent first is
really good. As a result, I’m so happy to be the winner.”
Runner-up in the Final, Finland’s Mattias Köykkä was also upbeat. “It’s difficult to find big sponsors in Finland”,
he explained. “So, a World Championship with limited cost like this one is a really excellent opportunity
to grasp.” The Finnish challenge was even more successful with 3rd place going to Teemu Suninen
(Maranello). Other drivers catching the eye in the top 5 included Irishman John Norris (Intrepid) and yet
another Finn, Ville Mäntylä (Energy), but also notable was 4 different chassis makes in the top 5 finishers.
Sixth placed Vincent Fraisse (Intrepid) finished in front of Julian Wagner (Mach 1), Spaniard Victor Colome
(Intrepid), Northern-Irishman Adam Strirling (Intrepid) and Austrian Stefan Riener (Intrepid).
Supporting the “U18” World Championship, the CIK-FIA Academy Trophy tracked 32 drivers all of different
nationalities, and all representing their own national federation. As a result, we had drivers from 4 different
continents but it was the European who were always the front-runners. In this competition where all
the drivers were provided with identical Parolin chassis and FIM motors, it really was only the talent of the
driver which made the difference.
In this context, French lad Antoine Hubert made a great impression by winning two close races. Selected
by the French Federation (FFSA) at the end of a two-day selection process, Antoine twice finished in front
of the Estonian Hans Villemi who had the fastest time in the qualifying practice in the rain. Third in the
first race, the driver from Monaco Charles Leclerc fell away as a result of a technical problem during the
second race. This was to the advantage of Finland’s Niklas Tiihonen, on the podium for the second race
and helped in the championship standings. Finishing 4th twice, English lad Roy Johnson was always in the
thick of the action and will be a serious contender at the end of August during the next round. The same
applies to the Dutchman Max Koebolt, Charles Leclerc, currently 6th in the championship, German Michael
Waldherr, the Swede Hannes Nillsson, the driver from Luxemburg Olivier Thill and Russian Vsevolod Gagen
who completed the top 10 after the two races in Germany.
The next round is scheduled for the Spanish circuit at Alcaniz from 27th to 29th of August, before the final
round at Val d’Argenton, in France (1st to 3rd of October). We already have a taste of things to come in
these two passionately fought competitions.

Le Championnat du Monde « M18 » de la CIK-FIA qui vivait ce week-end son coup d’envoi sur la piste
allemande « Prokart Raceland » de Wackersdorf a largement répondu aux attentes. Les pilotes, ayant
tous moins de 18 ans, ont offert un superbe spectacle durant tout le week-end et ont prouvé que la formule
– basée sur des coûts minimum et une équité maximum entre tous les concurrents – est promise
à un bel avenir.
Après les essais qualificatifs et les manches qualificatives, les 34 pilotes qualifiés pour la phase finale
se sont affrontés lors de deux préfinales, dont – originalité – la seconde proposait une grille de départ
totalement inversée. Au terme de ces deux courses, c’est l’Autrichien Julian Wagner (Mach 1) qui décrochait
la pole position. Mais tous savaient que seule la finale attribuerait des points pour cette première
épreuve de ce nouveau Championnat du Monde « M18 ».
Premier leader, Matias Köykkä (Maranello) cédait le relais à Simone Favaro (Parolin). Mais l’Italien était
exclu après quelques tours pour avoir provoqué un accident évitable lors du départ. Dès lors, c’est le
Britannique Jake Dennis (Top Kart) qui récupérait le leadership pour ne plus jamais le quitter. Coaché
par l’ex-Champion du monde Terry Fullerton (1973) et soutenu par la Racing Step Foundation, qui
aide des pilotes talentueux mais peu fortunés, le jeune Anglais a confirmé son statut d’espoir du sport
automobile britannique. « C’est un sentiment magnifique d’être en tête d’un Championnat du Monde »,
confiait-il. « Le concept de ce championnat est vraiment super et cherche à mettre le talent du pilote en
avant. Je suis donc d’autant plus heureux d’avoir gagné. »
Finalement deuxième, le Finlandais Mattias Köykkä se montrait lui aussi ravi. « Il est difficile de trouver
de gros sponsors en Finlande », estimait-il. « Dès lors, un championnat avec des coûts réduits comme
celui-ci est vraiment une excellente formule pour se faire remarquer. » Les Finlandais étaient d’ailleurs
plutôt à la fête avec la troisième place de Teemu Suninen (Maranello). On notait aussi dans le top 5 de
cette finale la présence de l’Irlandais John Norris (Intrepid) et d’un troisième Finlandais, Ville Mäntylä
(Energy), mais aussi de 4 marques différentes parmi les 5 premiers. Sixième, le Français Vincent
Fraisse (Intrepid) devançait Julian Wagner (Mach 1), l’Espagnol Victor Colome (Intrepid), le Britannique
Adam Stirling (Intrepid) et l’Autrichien Stefan Riener (Intrepid).
En marge du Championnat du Monde « M18 », le Trophée Académie de la CIK-FIA voyait s’affronter 32
pilotes de nationalités différentes, représentant tous leur fédération nationale. Et si on pouvait se réjouir
de la présence de pilotes de 4 continents, ce sont les Européens qui ont occupé le haut de l’affiche.
Dans cette compétition où tous les pilotes disposent d’un châssis Parolin et d’un moteur FIM, c’est vraiment
le talent du pilote qui peut faire la différence.
Dans ce contexte, le Français Antoine Hubert a fait forte impression en enlevant au sprint les deux
manches. Sélectionné par la Fédération Française (FFSA) au terme d’une sélection de deux jours,
Antoine a par deux fois devancé l’Estonien Hans Villemi, qui avait signé le meilleur temps sous la pluie
des essais qualificatifs. Troisième de la première manche, le Monégasque Charles Leclerc reculait suite
à un souci technique lors de la seconde joute. Tout profit pour le Finlandais Niklas Tiihonen, sur le
podium de la seconde course et du championnat. Deux fois 4e, le Britannique Roy Johnson s’est souvent
battu aux avant-postes et devrait être un sérieux candidat fin août lors du prochain rendez-vous. La
remarque vaut aussi pour le Néerlandais Max Koebolt, Charles Leclerc, provisoirement 6e du championnat,
l’Allemand Michael Waldherr, le Suédois Hannes Nillsson, le Luxembourgeois Olivier Thill et le Russe
Vsevolod Gagen, dans le top 10 après les deux courses allemandes.
Le prochain rendez-vous est donc fixé sur la piste espagnole d’Alcaniz, du 27 au 29 août, avant la finale
française du Val d’Argenton (1-3 octobre). On a déjà hâte d’y être pour suivre la suite de ces deux compétitions
passionnantes !
