Euro KF2: Verstappen must await the decision of the MSA National Court of Appeal

The title of European KF2 Champion was not officially attributed on the evening of this second and last meeting, at the PF International Circuit. Although Max Verstappen (Intrepid-TM) left Great Britain with the greatest number of points, the Dutchman is still not assured the title. To recall, on Saturday Max Verstappen appealed a 10-second penalty imposed on him following a collision with Ben Barnicoat (ART GP-Parilla) during a qualifying heat. As his appeal is suspensive, Max could only start from 9th place on the grid for Race 1, but the results of the two Races scheduled for Sunday now depend on the MSA National Court of Appeal, which has 30 days in which to deal with the case.

As Charles Leclerc (ART GP-Parilla), forced to spend time off-track after contact with an adversary, and Dennis Olsen (Energy-TM), when leading, both saw their hopes fade with dislodged chains, the son of the former Formula 1 driver climbed through the field to take control mid-Race and, subject to the decision of the Court of Appeal, he could grab his second victory of the season. Let down by his engine, the Italian Flavio Camponeschi had already ...

Euro KF3 : Russell doubles the stakes

European KF3 Champion in 2011 on his first attempt at the title, the Briton George Russell (Intrepid-Vortex) has now become the first Driver to win two consecutive European titles in the “Juniors” category (for 13-15 year-olds). George had already confirmed his standing as favourite at the first meeting in Varennes, by winning the first Race before becoming the victim of a rival braking too late at the first bend of the second joust. On his home turf, in Brandon, George did not suffer the slightest mishap. Only 30th after qualifying practice, the title-holder was never put out and gradually climbed through the pack to take 7th place on the grid for the first of the two English Races. From then on, George was scintillating, winning both Races with flying colours to take his personal score to three victories … with only three results being retained to decide the Championship!

“During the first Race, I made a great start and after that I was able to pass my rivals one by one,” he explained. “In the second, Martin Kodric took the lead and each time I overtook him, ...

CIK-FIA U18 World Championship: Easthope master in Braga

With a blue sky, sunshine and comfortable temperatures, the weather had decided to be kind for the opening of the third edition of the U18 World Championship (for those under 18 years of age) in Braga, Portugal. But to have a hope of shining under the sun it was first of all necessary to overcome the pitfalls of the Qualifying Heats to be among the 34 finalists out of 71 Drivers. It was then necessary to perform well in the two Prefinals, and particularly the second with its completely reversed starting grid. And after all of that, the winner had to be fastest in the 24-lap Final …

Henry Easthope (Sodi) was undeniably fast throughout the Portuguese weekend. In Qualifying Practice and in the Qualifying Heats, the Briton was never out of first place! His only fright came in the second Prefinal, contested from a reversed starting grid, when he was involved in an accident and relegated to the rear of the pack. He still managed to climb to 2nd on the grid for the Final, proving untouchable in the last confrontation, the most important. ...

CIK-FIA Academy Trophy: Victories for Russell and Lappalainen

Like the U18 World Championship, competition for the CIK-FIA Academy Trophy also began in Portugal. Selected by the Motor Sports Association (MSA) of Great Britain, George Russell and Alex Gill were among the favourites for the event. And true to form they cheerfully dominated the first Race! With the best start, from pole position, Russell was directly followed by his compatriot, fourth on the grid. Never more than a second apart, the two took a 7-second lead on those behind them, with Russell maintaining his lead to take the chequered flag. Behind the untouchable duo, the Finn Joonas Lappalainen just held off the Spaniard Javier Cobian for the last place on the podium. Penalised for jumping the start, the Belgian Amaury Bonduel fell back from 5th to 16th place, leaving Top 10 honours to the Norwegian Martin Ellegard, the Italian Mattia Drudi, ...

    Euro KF2: Verstappen takes command

Fought over two Races, the European KF2 Championship began in Wackersdorf and will conclude in Brandon, at the PF International circuit, on 22 July next. Two Races are on the programme at each of these venues, and three results out of the four will be taken into account to determine the final classification.

Arch-dominator of the Qualifying Heats, Max Verstappen (Intrepid-TM) took the lead in Race 1, run on a soaked track, and rapidly escaped the pack. But although he was almost 5 seconds ahead, he made a mistake causing a high-speed 360° spin. Overtaken by Charles Leclerc (ART GP), Max was unable to get back in front of the Monaco Driver. The Dutchman took his revenge however in the second confrontation, this time on a dry track, with a lead of practically 6 seconds. That enabled him to leave Germany leading the competition. “I was really very fast all weekend,” Max explained ...

    Euro KZ2: Juodvirsis makes history

In the history of CIK-FIA international competitions, never before has a Lithuanian taken a major title. That gap was filled on Sunday by Simas Juodvirsis (Energy-TM), the new European KZ2 Champion.

In this second division for karts with gearboxes, at the only meeting in Wackersdorf, Germany, fortune smiled on this 20-year-old in the Prefinal, run on a damp track. Starting from 10th place, in fact Simas rapidly took command to gain pole position for the Final. Despite the pressure, he did not falter on the grid, and his perfect start took him into the lead … which he never lost. Constantly increasing that lead, the Lithuanian was able to raise his arms to the sky as he passed the chequered flag. “I am extremely proud to be able to promote karting in my country,” he explained. “I think that with this title some people will have a better idea of where Lithuania is on the map,” he smiled. “It was my day today. Everything went perfectly and I’m incredibly happy!”Behind him, the Germans Michelle Di Martino (Energy-TM) and Marvin Meindorfer (Tony Kart-Vortex) were battling for second place on the last lap, finally finishing in that order. ...

Euro KZ1 : Pex among the greats

The European KZ1 Championship contested in Wackersdorf was not short of surprises. On the agenda for a perfectly exciting Race, once more there was changeable weather, knives were drawn for battle and a winner was to be declared … after the chequered flag!

As the first Driver to cross the finishing line in the Final, Marco Ardigo (Tony Kart-Vortex) believed he had won the European title in the top category for karts with gearboxes, but the Italian was excluded under the weight prescribed in the Regulations. According to the Italian team, an unusual fuel leak was the cause of his misfortune.

But one person’s misfortune is another’s good fortune, and the justifiable disappointment felt by Jorrit Pex (CRG-TM) changed to satisfaction at taking his first international title. “This is the best day of my karting career,” smiled the Dutch 19-year-old. “I was fast all weekend. From Qualifying Practice to the Final, I was never out of the Top 3. ...

CIK-FIA U18 World Championship and Academy Trophy: general satisfaction after the Official Test Days

Clement weather throughout, a track acclaimed by everyone, no major technical problems, a friendly atmosphere and the opportunity to spend a great deal of time on track with no fewer than 10 sessions, each of 20 minutes … there was no shortage of explanations for the smiling faces in the paddock during the Official Test Days for the CIK-FIA U18 World Championship and the Academy Trophy.

For two days, the drivers in the U18 World Championship were able to (re)try the WKE engine, provided free of charge by FIM, on the Friuli Venezia track in Northern Italy. “As there’s no exhaust valve, this engine is a little less powerful than a KF2 engine,” explained Charles Leclerc (ART GP) from Monaco, winner of the Academy Trophy last year and heralded among the competition favourites. ...

The CIK-FIA’s 50th anniversary fittingly celebrated

The famous Italian track of Jesolo had put on its Sunday best last weekend to celebrate in a dignified way the 50 years of the International Karting Commission, better known since under the name CIK-FIA.

In a meeting baptised “Coppa dei Campioni”, in memory of a mythical event of the 1970’s, the Pista Azzura hosted well over a hundred historical karts, the most ancient one dating from 1958 and the most recent from the early 90’s.

Karts from almost four decades could thus share the track in demonstrations which involved no competition whatsoever. Amongst the personalities present there was in particular Kees van de Grint, the Vice-President of the CIK-FIA, who did not hesitate to don his overalls and put in some hard work at the wheel of karts of different periods.

World KF1 Championship: Wins for Camponeschi and Foré

The battle for the World KF1 Championship began at the Suzuka circuit with plenty of thrills for karting fans. Although Flavio Camponeschi took control of the competition with three wins in four Races, the success of the four-times World Champion Davide Foré in the last round confirmed just how open the challenge is. With three trips to the podium, the Japanese driver Daiki Sasaki also made a strong impression at his home venue.

After the first day’s racing on Saturday, when Flavio Camponeschi won both Races, competitors in the World KF1 Championship set the clock back to zero for qualifying on Sunday morning.

The fastest time was recorded by the young Max Verstappen (14) who added a touch of originality by placing his Intrepid-TM machine in pole position for the qualifying heats, but with the Japanese driver Daiki Sasaki (Kosmic-Vortex), Karol Basz (Birel-BMB) from Poland and the Italians Felice Tiene (CRG-BMB) and Flavio Camponeschi (Tony Kart-Vortex), five drivers with five different chassis, all within 101 thousandths of a second.

    The 2011 season on film

The 2011 “CIK-FIA Karting Awards” (annual Prize-giving) ceremony held on 7 January in Paris was the opportunity of producing six video clips dedicated to the great events of the 2011 season. Shown for the first time at the prize-giving, these clips can now be viewed on the Karting TV platform, www.cikfia.tv.

Two of them are naturally focused on the two CIK-FIA Karting World Championships, the “U18” on the one hand and KF1 on the other. Both intense and spectacular, the World Cup for KZ1 is also worthy of its own sequence, which shows under various angles the bold and decisive overtaking manoeuvre achieved by Jonathan Thonon against Yannick de Brabander two corners from the finish. ...

The FIA and the CIK celebrate their 2011 Karting Champions

The International Karting Commission of the FIA (CIK-FIA) started the year 2012 in dignified fashion by rewarding its Champion Drivers of the 2011 season on Saturday 7 January in Paris, at the Pavillon Gabriel, near the FIA headquarters and just off the famous Champs Élysées and Place de la Concorde. Opened in the presence of the FIA President, Jean Todt, the ceremony has honoured nearly 30 award-winners.

The President of the CIK-FIA, Shaikh Abdulla bin Isa Al Khalifa, stated: “2011 was a great season which revealed very worthy Champions. In some Championships, including the World KF1 Championship, the Drivers tipped as favourites were the winners, but several others saw private and non-official team Drivers create pleasant and sometimes resounding surprises. ...

KF1, WKC, Day 2: De Vries retains gis World title

Dutchman Nyck De Vries was in no mood to relax the grip which he tightened on the CIK-FIA World Karting Championship 2011 in the first two races on Saturday.

Second place behind Ignacio D’Agosto in the race 3 was good enough to clinch the Crown, but as a good champion should, the Dutchman went out of karting with all guns blazing when he won a superbly contested race 4 to close his kart racing career with not only the world championship but a Farewell race win.
